Complex Predicates in Oceanic Languages: Studies in the Dynamics of Binding and Boundness

Les recherches précédentes sur les verbes sériels et les prédicats complexes dans les langues océaniennes ont surtout été consacrées aux constructions impliquant des prédicats non-contigus [sV(o)sV(o)], dites “core serial constructions”. Ce volume analyse les constructions et les fonctions du type dit “nucléaire”, comportant des prédicats contigus [sVV(o)] de même rang ou de rang différent (prédicats symétriques ou asymétriques), et présente de nouvelles données dans une perspective typologique.
Le gabarit VV manifeste une compression structurelle et la fusion des arguments des prédicats ; il ne peut toutefois pas être réduit à des cas de composition, de co-lexicalisation ou de grammaticalisation.
Les données montrent en outre que le gabarit VV (“nucléaire”) est compatible avec tous les ordres de base (VSO ou VOS, SVO, SOV), sans que cela puisse être imputé à un quelconque changement d’ordre. Cela contredit les arguments selon lesquels le type VV serait corrélé à l’ordre à verbe final, tandis que le type non-contigu (“core”) serait corrélé aux verbes en position médiane.

Previous research on serial verbs and complex predicates in Oceanic languages was mostly devoted to “core” serial constructions (with non-contiguous sV(o)sV(o) nuclei), this volume contributes a more detailed investigation of the “nuclear” type of complex predicates involving contiguous sVV(o) nuclei and presents new data for further typological studies.
Complex predicates of the form VV may correspond to two different syntactic structures, either co-ranking or hierarchized (head-modifier). Though the VV pattern does evidence a tendency towards structural compression, often entailing the fusion of the argument structures of two or more nuclei, yet it cannot be reduced to cases of co-lexicalization, compounding or grammaticalization.
The data also show the “nuclear” type to be compatible with all types of basic word orders (VSO, VOS, SVO, SOV), with no evidence that this results from any word order change. This challenges the claim that “nuclear” serialization correlates with verb-final order, and “core” serialization with verb-medial order.
